The Belgacom Memorial Van Damme is a prestigious international athletics meeting and is part of the IAAF Diamond League.
The Belgacom Memorial Van Damme is named after the Belgian top athlete Ivo Van Damme. Ivo got killed in a tragic car accident, only a few months after his remarkable successes at the Olympic Games in Montreal (1976) where he won the silver medal in both the 800m and the 1500m. The first “Memorial” was staged on 16 August 1977.
The “Van Damme”, has rapidly received international recognition. Already in 1985, the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) selected the event for the “IAAF Grand Prix”. Later on, it became a “Golden Four” and “Golden League” meeting. The meeting revolutionized the concept of oneday meetings and introduced music, fireworks, drums, a dynamic presentation and much more.
In the autumn of 2009, a new concept has been launched under the umbrella of the IAAF: the “IAAF Diamond League”, a world circuit of the best athletics meetings worldwide. The Belgacom Memorial Van Damme currently is one of the two yearly finals of this prestigious Diamond League!
The 37th edition will take place on Friday 6th September 2013 in the Brussels “King Baudouin Stadium”.
